   AutoCAD to EGS Bidirectional Translator

ASM 800 is a Bidirectional Translator between AutoCAD's DXF file format and Agilent EEsof EDA's EGS Archive file format used by MDS, Series IV and ADS layout modules. With ASM 800 you can import layouts or circuits done in AutoCAD into Agilent EEsof EDA layout tools or export layouts to mechanical design packages.

Below is shown a snapshot of an antenna feed that was drawn using AutoCAD. Our designer wishes to import this into ADS in order to integrate it with amplifiers and to do an analysis on the overall circuit. [antenna_feed.dxf] units in mils, the entire feed is drawn as a single zero width closed polyline on layer "feed".

Starting the Program

After starting the DXF2EGS program you will be presented with a "button" box that takes you step-by-step through the translation process. The first step is to select the DXF file to convert.

Notice that some buttons are "grayed" out. This means that you cannot go to this step until completing a previous step.

Select the DXF File

Select the DXF file from a standard dialog.

After loading the file, the DXF2EGS program scans it, in order to provide you with the list of layers in the DXF file. You will use this information later when determining which layers to convert.

Configuring the Translator

Translator options are stored in an ASCII configuration file. Once such a file is defined it can be re-used again and again. The configuration file is created or edited using the Configuration dialog.

To enter the configuration click on the Select CFG button

This will enable you to either select an existing configuration file or to name a new configuration file.

Configuration Settings

Units - you need to specify the DXF file's units as this info is not embedded into the DXF file.

DXF Grid = 1/Resolution

so if you need to resolve 0.01 mil you would select a grid of 100.

Text - you can scale text imported from DXF. Often the appearance is improved if the text is slightly reduced.

Controlling Layer Conversion

Both DXF and EGS Archive can contain data on multiple layers. The layer dialog lets the user choose which DXF layers to translate and also the target EGS layer. To enter the layer dialog:

click on the Layers button.

The layer dialog will open as shown below. To select a layer for translation make sure the checkbox is marked. You can also control the destination EGS layer.

Special Note on Layer "0" - AutoCAD always has a layer "0" - EGS has a layer "0" but one normally does not draw any entities on it. Therefore you should map AutoCAD's layer 0 to a non-zero layer in EGS.

Starting the Translation
You've selected the file to translate, configured the translator, decided what layers to process. You are now ready to start the translation.

Click on the Translate button:

A dialog will open enabling you to select the name of the EGS archive file. Once you've entered the name and clicked on OK the translation engine will begin. The resulting file will be written to disk.

Loading the EGS File into Agilent EEsof EDA's ADS

Part II shows how to load the resulting EGS archive file, antenna_feed.egs, into Agilent EEsof EDA's ADS (Advanced Design System) layout module.
